October 6 Cinque Terre Monterosso. Hike from Vernazza to Corniglia. Manarola. Riomaggiore.
I visited the Cinque Terre previously, in 2012. Photos from the 2012 visit are presented here: http://reluctantdragon.com/Europe2012/CinqueTerre.html
My goal on this trip was to visit each of the five villages and snap a few photos. Also, there is a path connecting the villages, called the 'Sentiero Azzuro' (the 'Blue Path'). In 2012, I walked it from Monterosso to Vernazza, and from Manarola to Riomaggiore (on the 'Via dell'Amore', the 'Route of Love').
In 2012, the sections from Vernazza to Corniglia and Corniglia to Manarola were closed due to damage from October 2011 floods. Now, in 2014, the stretch from Vernazza to Corniglia was open, and I planned to walk it, but the stretch from Corniglia to Manarola remained closed, and now the 'Via dell'Amore' was closed.
Arriving in Monterosso.

Approaching Corniglia, I passed a booth where they checked to make sure that I had purchased and validated my 'Cinque Terra Card', which is a permit to visit the villages and use the trains connecting them; 12 euros for a one-day pass.

There is a tunnel from the Riomaggiore rail station to the village. Much of the length of it is lined with lovely and varied mosaics (illustrated below). At the Riomaggiore end, one encounters this marvelous collection of tiles.

Doggie Bath. Looks like fun, right? Passing the doorway, I could hear shrieks of anguish from some poor soggy doggie I glimpsed inside being washed. On the other side of the doorway from the cute Doggie Bath cartoon sign, I saw the sign shown in the next photo, which made explicit the 'offerta hurtia' ('offer to hurt you')...
