The previous day, I sat on this bench to organize my kit before getting on a bus. I was wearing my hiking shorts, which I generally appreciate. (I ordered identical pairs from J.C. Penney on-line...) They are great shorts, but their drawback is that coins, pens, and other objects eject from the side pockets when you sit down. On this occasion, my watch/stopwatch, sans band, fell out of my pocket, between the slats of the bench, and down through the metal grate into the storm drain below. Pisser. I ordinarily used the stopwatch to track my hikes. For the remainder of this trip, I was forded to rely on the timestamp in my camera.

After passing the junction with the (difficult) trail up to the ridge from Corvara, which I had mastered with my friend Jen in 2012, we continued partway along the shoulder toward Rif. Puez. Then we turned around to follow the Alta Via 2 back to Rif. Frara and Passo Gardena.

Bob had to travel later, so we set out on a short hike above Ortisei, starting from the mid-station (at Furnes) of the Seceda lift. We hiked up toward Rif. Brogles and then west to the Resciesa train/lift down to Ortisei.

We came upon the appurtenances of a stone mason at work. When I continued long the trail, I encountered a wizened old man with a load of rocks in his arms, the stone mason.

At this point in the route we reached a pass, where we could see over the ridge toward the north. On a less cloudy day, the snow-capped Alps of southwestern Austria would grace the horizon.
