September 11 - Walk from Village to Château de Ferrette. Local Loop Hike.

Leaving the Dolomites by bus, I continued by train across western Austria and most of Switzerland to reach Basel and a commuter train north into Germany. Visiting my friend Charles there, we drove to a fish farm to procure some pond-raised trout. Some customers chose to fish for their dinner. We skipped that step.

The next morning, we set off in Charles' and Andrea's sturdy steed for a field trip to the scenic Alsace region of France.

And by these small placards on trees. As I've found, generally, in European hiking, the trails are well marked, except where they are not. On this hike, I encountered trail junctions where there was no placard to indicate the correct trail choice...

I wasn't sure if this deep cleft was the 'Grotto de Nains'.

At the low point in the cleft, there was this cave opening. Perhaps this cave was the 'Grotto... 'I did not have a headlamp and did not explore it.

Charles and Andrea had expended considerable effort and expense to renovate the downstairs apartment. I had the pleasure of experiencing the fruits of their labor by residing there during my brief tenure.
