In October, 1977, I visited my recent alma mater, Hampshire College, from Oregon after moving out there several months earlier (via the fateful trip during which my car Louis blew up).

During my visit to Hampshire, on Columbus Day I hiked Mt. Monadnock with my friend Rich Brown, who had introduced me to the mountain. We were astonished by the hordes of people we encountered on the mountain.

The next day, there was an article in the New York Times about the Columbus Day ritual of hiking Monadnock on Columbus Day. We had inadvertently participated in the ritual. Here's the article.
