excellent viewpoint, 0.3 miles and 200 feet north of
the summit trail. Reportedly, almost 40 of the 48 4,000-footers are
visible on a good day. |

About a minute
after I took this photo, one of my feet slipped on the trail. My
lunge for balance propelled the other foot into a rock or root that ripped
my big toenail from its mooring on my toe. |

The nail did
not actually fall off for another month but it was pretty well
ruined. I still had almost 5 miles to hike out to the car and did
not have a surplus of daylight. I didn't look at my foot until I got
back to the car. |
